Looking for a way to get your family out of the house and exploring the community this summer? We’ve designed just the activity for you!

Our Sustainable Development Goals Scavenger Hunt has 17 challenges that anyone ages 9-99 can do. Some challenges will take you out to explore libraries, green spaces, and the communities where we live. Other challenges can be done right from your living room. All of them will get you and your family thinking about the kind of future world we want to live in!

Each challenge relates to one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 17 of the most pressing challenges facing our world today. For example, for SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. Most of our energy in Manitoba comes from renewable hydroelectric power. Your challenge for SDG 7 is to find something generating renewable energy near you. Can you find a wind turbine, a solar panel, or something else generating electricity?

If you get stumped, don’t worry! Fill in a Wild Card Challenge to replace a challenge you’re having trouble with.

Whether you’re looking to give your children a warm-up before they go back to school, or just want to learn about some of the great work Manitobans are doing towards a sustainable future, the challenges in the SDG Scavenger Hunt are a great way to close out the summer together.

Are you outside Manitoba? We've made a national version of the SDG Scavenger Hunt so you can participate!

If you are in Manitoba, every challenge you complete in the SDG Scavenger Hunt before September 6 can be entered to win sustainable, local prizes! We’ll be giving away a pair of re-useable snack bags from Planet Pantry, a $25 gift card to McNally Robinson for Kids, and 2 lb. of delicious Fairtrade coffee from Forbidden Flavours Roastery in Brandon.

Contest Rules

To enter the contest email scans, photos, or a filled-in PDF of the Scavenger Hunt forms with all completed challenge pages to communications@mcic.ca. One email address may submit forms for multiple individuals. For each challenge completed, you will receive one entry in the draw. Finishing all 17 challenges is not required for entry! Entries must be received by September 6, 2022, at 12:00 AM CDT.

Eligibility of entries will be judged at the sole discretion of MCIC. Entries may be rejected if insufficient effort was made to complete the challenge, or if multiple forms were completed by the same individual.

Anyone is welcome to complete the SDG Scavenger Hunt and share your challenges with us, but only Manitoba residents are eligible to win prizes. MCIC staff and their immediate family members (partners, siblings, parents and children) are not eligible to win prizes.

Each entry will be assigned a number in the order they are received. A random number generator will be used to draw the winning entry numbers. Three draws for prizes will occur in the following order: re-useable snack bags, McNally Robinson for Kids gift card, Fairtrade coffee. Winners of the first two draws will be ineligible for subsequent draws.

Winners will be drawn and contacted by email on September 8. Prizes will be sent by mail, so a valid Manitoba address or PO Box will be needed once winners are contacted. If no address is provided by September 15, the prize will be forfeit and another winner will be drawn. Once prizes are in the mail, MCIC is not responsible for the delivery or receipt of prizes and will not replace any prize if it is damaged or lost.
